detail.

Detailing includes disassembly and cleaning, in addition to conditioning, lubrication, minor repairs, and sharpening.

Bottom right picture, here, is after work was completed

Nicks can be minor or major depending on how far the gouge enters the rideline and into the convex blade.  Most nicks can be removed by re-establishing the ride line by wet stone and using larger micron diamond pads

Job done.  Whether lefty (to the left) or righty, each shear is detailed and the stylist is provided the angles and notes for their particular shear including the angle used to sharpen their particular pair.  Stylists should keep the notes to let whomever sharpens the shear next time.  The angle (example 40 degrees) is important to remember as the lower the angle the more metal is removed from the shear during sharpening.  Using conservative angles extends the life of the shear.

Hidden beneath finger guards can be bacteria and corrosion.  Detailing includes removal, disinfection, and cleaning of these parts.  Additionally, bumpers can be replaced.  The bumper serves two purposes: 1.) eliminates the sound of metal clicking and 2.) keeps the shear tips aligned.  The bumper thickness is changed by your sharpener if needed to ensure tips aren't separated.  Without a bumper the blades cross exposing the sharpened blade to the outside of the shear which can cause injury.  It's time to replace your shear if the bumper is worn completely AND the tips are apart.

Grime Gallery - part of the satisfaction of the sharpening profession is taking a pair of shears a stylist believes are hopeless and detailing them to a nearly new state.  Whether you use my services or not, make sure your sharpener thoroughly cleans all parts and disinfects your shears during sharpening.
